Frequently Asked Questions about Face Exfoliation

Why is exfoliating good for your skin?

Exfoliating supports the skin’s natural renewal process and reveals a fresh, even complexion.

By removing dead skin cells, it smooths the skin, boosts circulation, and enhances the absorption of active ingredients. Regular exfoliation helps prevent clogged pores, blemishes, and dullness – for skin that looks revitalized and glowing.

Types of Face Exfoliators

What types of face exfoliators are there?

There are three main types: physical, chemical, and enzymatic exfoliators.

  • Facial scrubs contain fine particles (like ground jojoba seeds) that manually remove dead skin cells. They’re ideal for dull skin.
  • Chemical exfoliators work with fruit acids (AHAs or BHAs) to gently dissolve dead skin without friction.
  • Enzyme peels use natural enzymes (e.g., from pineapple or papaya) and are especially gentle – perfect for sensitive skin.

What’s the difference between AHA, BHA, and enzyme peels?

AHA, BHA, and enzyme peels differ in how they work and how well they’re tolerated by the skin:

  • AHA (Alpha-Hydroxy Acids) exfoliate the skin’s surface using fruit acids like glycolic or lactic acid – great for dry or mature skin.
  • BHA (Beta-Hydroxy Acids), like salicylic acid, go deeper into pores to reduce oil and inflammation – ideal for blemish-prone skin.
  • Enzyme peels use natural enzymes to gently exfoliate without irritation – suitable even for sensitive skin.

Which exfoliator suits which skin type?

The right exfoliator should always be tailored to your individual skin type – because every skin has different needs:

  • Dry skin: AHA peels with lactic acid promote cell renewal and help retain moisture – for a soft, smooth feel.
  • Oily or blemish-prone skin: Peels with salicylic acid penetrate deep into pores, regulate excess oil, and have anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Mature skin: Fruit acid peels stimulate cell renewal and help smooth fine lines – for a more even complexion.
  • Dull or tired skin: Facial scrubs with gentle particles remove dead skin cells and boost circulation – for a fresh, revitalized glow.
  • Sensitive skin: Enzyme peels based on natural ferments (like papaya or pineapple) are especially gentle on the skin barrier.

Our Expert Tip:

If you have sensitive skin, we recommend exfoliating no more than 1–2 times per month with a mild enzyme peel. Also, make sure your exfoliator is free from microplastics, synthetic fragrances, and harsh additives.

How often should you exfoliate your face?

The ideal frequency depends on your skin type and the type of exfoliator you use. In most cases, one to two times per month is more than enough—when it comes to exfoliation, less is often more.

Your skin naturally renews itself approximately every 28 days. A gentle exfoliator can support this natural process by removing dead skin cells and helping the skin better absorb active ingredients. However, over-exfoliating can irritate and stress the newly regenerated skin.

It’s important to pay attention to how your skin reacts and give it enough time to recover between uses. Especially if you have sensitive skin, opt for a gentle, well-tolerated exfoliator—ideally one that’s certified natural skincare.

What Should You Keep in Mind When Using a Face Exfoliator?

  • Use in the evening: After exfoliating, your skin is more sensitive to light—nighttime is ideal for optimal regeneration.
  • Cleanse gently: Make sure to thoroughly (but gently) remove makeup, dirt, and oil before exfoliating. Our Delicate Cleansing Milk is ideal for prepping the skin without disturbing its natural balance.
  • Follow the instructions: Always stick to the recommended application time on the product label—leaving it on too long can irritate the skin.
  • Rinse thoroughly: Use lukewarm water and avoid rubbing. A natural sea sponge works well for this.
  • Soothe and protect: Apply a calming, hydrating treatment afterward, and use daily sun protection with at least SPF 30.
  • Avoid active ingredients: Skip potentially irritating actives like Vitamin C right after exfoliating.

What Should You Do If Your Skin Turns Red After Exfoliating?

Mild redness after a face exfoliation is normal and usually subsides quickly. However, if your skin remains irritated for longer, it may be a sign of over-exfoliation. In that case, it’s best to pause exfoliating and avoid potentially irritating ingredients like retinol or Vitamin C.

Reduce the frequency of your exfoliation routine and switch to especially gentle formulas going forward. If redness or a tight, uncomfortable feeling persists, consult a dermatologist.

Does the Time of Day and Sun Protection Matter When Exfoliating?

Exfoliators are best used in the evening, as the skin becomes more sensitive to sunlight afterward and needs time to regenerate. At night, your skin is less exposed to environmental stressors, which helps the exfoliating effects work more effectively.

Expert Tip:

After exfoliating, consistent sun protection is essential. Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 24 to 48 hours. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30–50 daily to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and to prevent irritation or pigmentation.

Can Exfoliating Help Reduce Blemishes and Clogged Pores?

Yes, exfoliators with salicylic acid are especially effective for clogged pores, blackheads, and breakouts, as they deeply cleanse the skin and visibly improve texture.

Salicylic acid penetrates deep into the sebaceous glands, helps dissolve buildup, and has anti-inflammatory properties. With regular use, it can help prevent blemishes, blackheads, and rough, bumpy skin (also known as keratosis pilaris), which often appears on the upper arms or cheeks.

Exfoliation can also support clearer skin on the body, especially on areas like the back or décolleté. For this, we recommend specially formulated body exfoliators that can be applied over larger areas and are tailored to the needs of body skin.

Can Exfoliators Help with Dark Spots and Signs of Aging?

Yes, fruit acid peels can visibly improve the appearance of pigmentation and early signs of skin aging.

They promote cell renewal, support the skin’s natural regeneration, and help gently brighten discoloration. When combined with other anti-aging skincare products, they smooth and revitalize the skin—making them a powerful addition to any age-defying routine.

Is Exfoliation Suitable for Sensitive Skin?

Yes, but sensitive skin requires especially gentle, natural exfoliators.

Mild enzyme peels made with natural ferments like papaya or pineapple are particularly well-suited. They promote cell renewal without disrupting the skin barrier, making them exceptionally gentle and skin-friendly.

Our Gentle Clarifying Enzyme Peel is specifically formulated for sensitive skin: certified natural cosmetics, vegan, and free from alcohol, synthetic fragrances, and other irritating ingredients. The ideal choice for a clear, balanced complexion without compromising on tolerance.

At What Age Should You Start Exfoliating your face?

A gentle face exfoliator can be introduced as early as the teenage years—always depending on individual skin needs.

For blemish-prone teenage skin, a clarifying peel with salicylic acid can help prevent clogged pores and breakouts. From your mid-twenties onward, fruit acid or enzyme peels support cell renewal, promote an even complexion, and help counteract the first signs of aging in a gentle, skin-friendly way.

Is It Safe to Use Exfoliators During Pregnancy or While Breastfeeding?

Yes, with the right formulation, a gentle exfoliator can be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Because hormonal changes can make skin more reactive during this time, we recommend using especially mild, natural exfoliators. Choose a skin-friendly formula that’s free from synthetic fragrances, parabens, and alcohol to care for your skin without overburdening it.

Expert Tip:

We recommend doing a patch test on the inside of your forearm to check for any sensitivity. Apply the product to clean skin and leave it for 24 hours without washing or rubbing the area. If no redness, itching, or irritation occurs, it’s safe to use.
