Digital Aging: Why Blue Light harms our skin

Smartphones, PCs and LED lights bombard our skin day after day with HEV, the so-called Blue Light. According to recent studies, HEV rays are a significant cause of skin damage and premature skin aging.

Not only the sunlight but also artificial light makes our skin age. Although Blue Light has an oxidative effect similar to UV light, the importance of protection against Blue Light is not well known. In natural daylight, the harmful impact of the blue component is mostly compensated by the regenerative red and infrared radiation, but as we surround ourselves more and more with light sources (screens, etc.) which not only emit an increased amount of blue but also lack the regenerative red components, the subject is more topical than ever.

HEV radiation

According to recent studies, HEV (High Energy Visible) rays are a significant cause of skin damage and premature skin aging, as they deeply enter the dermis where they cause a high development of free radicals. Although HEVs are less dangerous than UV radiation, they are particularly pernicious: completely invisible, not perceptible and they don’t cause immediate, visible signs of damage.

What can I do about it?

The increased exposure to Blue Light causes oxidative stress for cell structures – which is shown by an increased prevalence of free radicals – and can damage the protective functions of the skin. In fact, blue light can reach our dermis and meet collagen and elastin, causing damages such as wrinkles, sagging skin and hyperpigmentation. It is essential that you apply sun protection with broadband protection if you spend a lot of time in front of the computer.

Broadband protection

Our sun care aims at broadband protection of the entire light spectrum to optimally protect your skin from premature aging and unwanted pigmentation.

The central functional ingredient of our sun care is extracted from the blossoms of the summer lilac (buddleja). It is known for its wealth of verbascoside and echinacoside. It not only protects the plant against UV and IRA but also offers the skin optimum protection against natural and artificial light. Besides, it can reduce the negative potential of HEV light. Highly effective extracts of blueberry and cranberry act as optimal radical scavengers and strengthen the skin’s resistance.
