Vegan cosmetics: For the sake of the animals

What are vegan cosmetics?

VEGAN MEANS ANIMAL-FREE. THOSE WHO LIVE A VEGAN LIFESTYLE COMPLETELY AVOID PRODUCTS OF ANIMAL ORIGIN. THIS DOES NOT ONLY APPLY TO FOOD. COSMETICS WITH ANIMAL INGREDIENTS ARE ALSO TABOO FOR VEGANS. IN OTHER WORDS, ALL INGREDIENTS OF ANIMAL ORIGIN HAVE NO PLACE IN THE VEGAN BATHROOM. BUT VEGANS GO ONE STEP FURTHER. ALL PRODUCTS MUST BE PRODUCED WITHOUT ANIMAL TESTING.

And this is where many cosmetics companies operate in a gray area: although their lipsticks, creams, etc. often contain no animal ingredients, they still rely on animal testing for the pre-market testing series. Nevertheless, they adorn themselves with the tempting label of “vegan cosmetics.” The reason: vegan has become a real marketing boost.

What ingredients should not be used in vegan cosmetics?

All ingredients derived from animals have no place in vegan cosmetics. This includes milk, beeswax, honey and lanolin (wool wax). The red dye carmine is also prohibited in vegan cosmetics because it is extracted from scale insects.

Natural Cosmetics = Vegan Cosmetics?

The terms “natural cosmetics” and “vegan cosmetics” are often used in the same breath. However, they should not be used synonymously. On the contrary, natural cosmetics are not necessarily vegan. In addition to plant-based products, they can also contain animal-based ingredients such as beeswax or milk. Conversely, vegan cosmetics are not natural cosmetics. Non-certified vegan cosmetics are not always impeccable.

Vegan is not automatically good

The vegan label says little about the ingredients themselves. Although vegan cosmetics contain no animal ingredients, they may use synthetic ingredients, pesticides and other additives. For example, conventional products often contain soluble plastics, PEGs, or hormonally active UV filters. Although these are not animal ingredients, they are still substances that can be harmful to humans and the environment. Just because the ingredients do not come from animals does not mean they are good for our skin.

Example Collagen

Collagen is considered a miracle ingredient in cosmetics. It makes the skin more elastic and is said to smooth out wrinkles. But what many people don’t know: In conventional cosmetics, collagen is derived from animal raw materials, usually slaughterhouse waste, and is mainly used in anti-aging products. But who wants to treat their skin and hair with slaughterhouse waste?

What about plant-based alternatives like vitamin C, gotu kola, green algae or rose hips? These natural insider tips, which we use in our products, gently stimulate the synthesis of collagen and thus provide for healthy skin and hair in a natural way.
